TO ease transportation burden and enhance the administration on their domains, Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, yesterday presented 200 Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to all traditional rulers in the 177 communities of the state, saying that the state was experiencing revolution in all aspects of life.
Obi, who disclosed that the customised vehicles manufactured by Innoson Motors cost over N2 billion, said they were completely free from charges since all had been registered.
While assuring of more government commitment, he stressed that the gesture was in recognition of the pivotal roles of traditional rulers, who should be encouraged to work in relative comfort for the good and progress of the state.
Also, the governor has commenced the disbursement of N6.5 billion approved for 253 secondary schools in the state for the upgrading and rehabilitation of infrastructure.
While presenting N10 million to the principals of each secondary school, totaling N2.53 billion, during a town hall meeting at the Women Development Centre in Awka, Obi said the money is the first phase of the exercise. However, he warned that any principal found wanting would be dealt with accordingly.
He further disclosed that the state Executive Committee has approved the sum of N6.5 billion for schools in the state and that all the schools would get school buses, computers, laboratory equipment, sports equipment and various learning materials, according to their population.
The governor, who made the presentation at the Government House in Awka, said that only 50 vehicles would be given out yesterday while the rest would follow in batches from today at the same venue.
He said: “We owe the traditional institution every respect. They are the custodians of authority; whatever government is doing today is as a result of the support received from our royal fathers.”
According to him, the state government has unofficially adopted Innoson Motors as its brand, so he urged Nigerians not to search elsewhere but rather patronise the motor manufacturing company.
In his remarks, Chairman of Anambra Traditional Rulers Council, Obi Alfred Achebe, commended Obi and described what the state was witnessing under the present administration as unprecedented.
