Investors,
corporate organisations and other well-meaning Nigerians have been
called upon to encourage pupils who demonstrate uncommon knowledge in
the areas of invention and entrepreneurship.
This was the view of the Executive
Director, School Buggie Media and Events, Lagos, Mr. Olalekan
Azeez-Iginla, whose outfit runs the Lagos Jam Feast in conjunction with
the Lagos State Ministry of Education.
The Lagos Jam Feast, according to him,
uses poetry, choral and drama to bring out creativity in secondary
school pupils in the state, through competition, which enters its
seventh edition this year.
He said that during the 2013 edition
scheduled for July 9 at De-Hall, Ikeja, Lagos, individuals and
organisations would receive awards tagged Schools’ Invention and
Entrepreneurship Investment Awards.
According to him, the programme, which
commenced in 2006, has produced many pupil-inventors who would showcase
their work during the event.
He said, “We are showcasing the
inventions made by these pupils to Nigerians and investors who could
invest in them and turn them to popular brands.
“Among what they had invented are
windmill, collapsible bridge, bomb detector, and a generator that runs
on urine. If these inventions are left in their raw stage, they may
remain dormant.”
Azeez-Iginla stated that the pupils were
those who qualified from the six education districts across the state,
after they had gone through the preliminary and semi-final stages from
the different districts.
He said, “We used the young people’s
culture approach to get the pupils interested in participating in the
programme, by using choral, poetry and drama. If we had told them to
come and invent through science, they would have thought that we were
still talking about books
“But with music, dance and drama as the
components, the pupils accepted it. In the next 10 years, Nigeria might
be having great inventors from among them.”
Azeez-Iginla, who was in company with
the chief logistics officer of the organisation, Ms. Stella Osolo, said
some media houses, which include The Punch and Channels
Television, have been at the forefront of promoting education and youth
development in the country, and they would be given awards.
Besides, other individuals and corporate
organisations have also been listed for awards for their commitment and
contribution to education.
They include one of the executive
directors of Punch Nigeria Limited, Ms. Omoshalewa Aboderin; Chairman
Channels TV, Mr. John Momoh; a member, House of Representatives, Mrs.
Oluremi Tinubu; Proprietress, Vivian Fowler School, Mrs. Leila Fowler;
and Chief of Staff to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Olanrewaju Babalola.
Others are Chairman, Elizade Motors,
Chief Michael Ade Ojo; Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs.
Olayinka Oladunjoye; Chief Executive Officer, Promasidor Nigeria
Limited, Mr. Keith Richard; directors of Kennis Music, Mr. Kenny Ogungbe
and Dayo Adeneye.
He noted, “These individuals and
organisations have contributed to education and youth development. They
deserve to be honoured.”
