- The senator representing Cross River State southern senatorial
district at the National Assembly, Prince Bassey Otu, has advised that
the federal government should not create any new states for
now. Speaking with reporters in Calabar, he was of the opinion that
although new states were necessary by the federal government needs to
frontally tackle the various security challenges facing her in order to
enhance a better life in entirety.
The Senator stated that it is when security challenges in the country
are solved that the states to be so created can be feasible as they
will enjoy the benefit of nationhood thereby fulfilling their of
self-determination and even development as canvassed by the
agitators. ”The country is presently plagued with the problem of
irregular supply of electricity from the national grid, deplorable state
of federal roads and insecurity among others that require remedy which
if rectified will strengthen the bond of unity,” Otu stated. ”What we
require most is unity, without which there can be no peace which is
vital for development and prosperity for now and in the years ahead”,
the Senator contended.
He advised the agitators for the creation of new states to eschew
bitterness in the pursuit of their wish explaining that the exercise
should not be misconstrued to mean separation of hitherto kith and kins
but the provision of basic amenities and resources the areas were
previously denied or neglected.
