New land and air patrols by the Defence Headquarters are trying
to contain new terrorist threats in Borno. The army says that Boko Haram
insurgents have sent threat letters to residents of Bama and Gwoza,
forcing them to flee their homes. In the letters, written in Kanuri and
Hausa, the terrorists warned the residents that there would be a
bloodbath in seven days and they should resign their jobs, burn their
employment letters, and flee.
Chris Olukolade, Brigadier General and Director of Defence
Information, said that the army’s intelligence would fish out and deal
with the insurgents while ensuring there was no attack on lives and
property.
He said, “Threats by the group are being duly addressed by ongoing
patrols of the special forces on land and air. That area is now under a
special focus and every available information is being used to trail any
terrorist attempting to team up for any kind of operation or threat
against citizens.”
He said deployment of officers was increasing everyday, and the terrorists (who he described as miscreants) would be stopped.
Thankfully they are not referring to this as an ‘isolated threat’.
